But am trying desperately to find a news group or web site that might help
us. Thought some of you folks might give some direction. We have a red cedar
and brick home and are being plagued by woodpeckers who are pecking out the
knots in the wood siding to get into the space behind it and make nests !
They're really making a mess of the side of our house and aside from
shooting them with BB guns or something I don't know what to do. Any help at
all would be greatly appreciated. Please forgive is post is inappropriate to
this group. Couldn't find a place that seems on point.

If your a poor shot use a shotgun.... Or chop the tree down and solve the
problem that way.

Josh,

You could try one of those fake Great Horned Owls or discreetly placed
rubber snakes. At this time of year they would be looking for grubs in the
wood as opposed to working on nesting sites I would think.

If you know any falconers, have them come by and exercise their birds near
your house!

thats a good idea, if you bought a bunch of rubber snakes, various kinds,
and left the head and front of the body hanging out each woodpecker hole,
that may discourage them from using the holes that are already dug, but,
what i was going to suggest, is yuo need to find a falconer with a
short-winged
hawk like coopers or sharp-shinned, those woodys worst enemy. they will be
dinner, and stop frequenting the area with so much ego if they fear a hawk
in the area, EVeN A HAWK sillhouette that hangs from a tree swinging in the
wind(must be almost exact shape tough of on of the smaller short-winged
hawks tough like above mentioned..

maybe try cutting one from thick black paper, or spray painted cardboard,
enlarged pattern from petersons field guide (it has silhouettes of all birds
in there)that should fly real good in the wind on a piece of fishing
lineabout 3-4 feet long. slightly bend the tail upwards, and the wings so it
looks kind of real from multiple directiions. try different placement
locations and different lengths of string. you will have those peckers had!
theoretically, lol
